Girl Education

Educating a girl child. (Shomesa Omwana)

In 1997 and 2007, Uganda introduced Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) respectively. These state funded programs aim to achieve equitable access to conducive, quality, relevant and affordable primary and secondary education to all children without discrimination. However, girl education is still facing many challenges like lack of basic necessities for girls to go to school like uniform, sanitary towels, books, school fees, and others.

60% of married girls drop out of primary school before getting married. And the only option for girl dropouts is getting married at an early age. Education is one of the strategies to keep girls away from child marriage. Education keeps girls engaged, improve their understanding of the world, decision making and instills one’s hope of brighter future.
